Located in the Vanoise Massif, Méribel is the uncut jewel of the exceptional 3 Valleys region. Elegant and discreet, it has been able to retain an authentic style and atmosphere through an architecture which blends harmoniously into its natural surroundings.
The village is filled with Savoyard chalets and refurbished barns along narrow streets. Méribel-Village sits at 1,400m in altitude and has been growing in size and importance since being founded by British skier Peter Lindsay in 1938. Before then, only a few chalets were in place in the area, but now it is connected by the Golf Ski lift and has easy access to Méribel Centre.
Méribel Centre is the heart of the Méribel area, and arguably the centre of Les Trois Vallées region. At 1500m in altitude, it hosts cinemas, pools, spas, shops and restaurants and boasts the best nightlife in the area. Méribel Les Hauts (1,600m in altitude) houses the first airport in high altitude (1,700m), but the village is more on the quiet side. It has a golf course and stunning views, and generally offers a vast amount of hiking trails. The highest village is Méribel-Mottaret, set at 1,750m in altitude.
Through its central position, Méribel, the true heart of the 3 Valleys, provides direct access to the resorts of Courchevel, La Tania, Val Thorens, Les Ménuires and Saint Martin de Belleville, giving full access to the 105 km² (around 600 km of pistes) ski arena, considered and recognised as the best in the world.
Les 3 Vallées area comprises 180 lifts, 335 marked runs (over 600 kilometres) and over 130 km of cross-country tracks. Les 3 Vallées was expanded about ten years ago to incorporate a fourth valley, though the area kept the name 3 Vallées. The area comprises the resorts of Courchevel, La Tania, Méribel, Les Menuires-Saint Martin, Val Thorens and Orelle.
The resort comprises the sub villages of Méribel-Mottaret, at an altitude of 1750m towards the head of the Allues valley, and Méribel Village at 1400m on the road to Courchevel.
For those that wish to venture even further, the fourth valley Maurienne can be reached within a day’s skiing. There are plenty of bars and restaurants to suit every taste and plenty of activities to do off the slopes too. A resort with bags of alpine charm, breath-taking scenery and vast amounts of fabulous skiing, it’s understandable that it has retained such popularity amongst avid skiers.
Another major attraction of Méribel is the Vanoise National Park, 2,700 acres that stretch from the Lake Tuéda to the Gebroulaz glacier. Beyond its natural beauty and large landscapes, Méribel Centre can get quite boisterous in the evenings. The rest of the villages in the resort tend to attract skiing and mountain lovers looking for a more peaceful and traditional environment.
